Grand River Valley

Located in Northeast Ohio

About the GRV

The Grand River Valley (GRV) Wine Region is a federally designated American Viticultural Area (AVA), located in northeast Ohio within two miles of the Grand River and spanning both Lake and Ashtabula Counties. Today, the region is supported by two dedicated visitor bureaus: Tour Lake County and the Ashtabula County Visitors Bureau. Together they welcome travelers and highlight the area’s award-winning wineries, culinary experiences, and scenic landscapes.

The GRV’s story begins more than 12,000 years ago, when glaciers carved out the Great Lakes and left behind fertile soils of sand, gravel, and clay, ideal for grape cultivation. Rolling slopes and valleys create natural air movement and drainage, while the moderating influence of Lake Erie extends the growing season and shields vines from damaging frosts. These unique conditions make the GRV one of the most popular winery regions in the Midwest and one of the fastest-growing wine destinations in the country.

The tradition of winemaking here dates back to the early 1800s, when settlers first recognized the potential of the land for grape cultivation. Generations of growers and winemakers have since refined their craft, blending Old World techniques with modern innovation. This commitment has turned the Grand River Valley into Ohio’s premier wine destination and one of the best travel destinations in the Midwest for wine lovers.

Today, the Grand River Valley is home to more than 1,300 acres of vineyards and 31 wineries. That number continues to grow each year. Visitors can experience everything from family-owned boutique wineries to larger estate producers, each offering their own expression of cool-climate varietals like Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Franc. To be labeled as a GRV AVA wine, at least 85 percent of the grapes must come from within the valley, ensuring authenticity and quality in every glass.

The landscape, the soil, the climate, and the passion of its people all come together to define the Grand River Valley. It is a nationally recognized, award-winning wine region where history and innovation meet in every glass.

Grape Vineyard

Interesting Facts

  • Debonné Vineyards alone farms 175 acres of grapes, producing 85,000 gallons of wine annually.

  • It takes about four clusters of grapes to produce a single glass of wine

  • The ideal temperature for harvesting and pressing grapes for ice wine is 17°F or below

  • The Grand River Valley lies along the International Pinot Belt, a narrow band of latitude that stretches from France to Oregon, where many great Pinot grapes are grown.

  • Grapes produce sugars as they ripen, so wines from warmer climates will generally contain more sugar and are stronger than those from cooler regions, which tend towards acidity instead. Wines in the Grand River Valley may have less residual sugar because of this
